Urban Legends: The Spider Bite
STORY: A girl is spending the day lounging on the
beach. Her towel is spread out across the hot sand, and she is drifting
to sleep as she tans. Just as she is about to fall asleep, she feels
a small insect creep across her shoulders and onto her face. She
opens her eyes and sees that a spider is making its way across her
face. The girl quickly brushes the insect off her cheek and goes
back to tanning.
About a week later, the girl notices a bright red
pimple on her cheek. Despite her efforts to get rid of the pimple,
it grows more and more each day. Eventually, the skin becomes enflamed
and begins to resemble a puss-filled blister. One day while she
is brushing her hair, she hits the boil with the brush. This causes
the boil to explode and hundreds of tiny white spiders to come pouring
out of it.
Because the girl had been sunbathing, her pores had
enlarged enough for a mother spider to lay an egg sac in her face.
When she bumped the boil with her hair dryer, it caused the egg
sac to hatch.
ORIGIN: Unfortunately, it is impossible to track the
origin of this urban legend. As far as scientists know, it is not
possible for any type of spider to lay an egg sac in the pores of
a human face.
