Urban Legends: The Body in the Bed
STORY: A man and a woman were in Las Vegas for their
honeymoon. When they checked into their room, they both noticed
a very bad odor. The husband immediately called down to the front
desk to inform the manager of the awful smell. The manager apologized,
but explained that he could not offer them a new suite as the hotel
was completely booked because of a sales convention taking place
in the city. The manager explained that a maid would be sent to
their room to get rid of the smell. While the maid was cleaning,
the couple would be sent to a restaurant of their choice, compliments
of the hotel.
When the couple returned from lunch, they could still
smell the awful odor. Again, the husband called down to the front
desk and asked to speak to the manager. The manager apologized profusely
and told the man that he would try to find him a suite at another
hotel. The manager called every hotel in the area, but he couldn’t
find them a suite anywhere because of a sales convention taking
place in the city.
The couple was very frustrated with the hotel. There
was no reason why the hotel shouldn’t be able to get rid of
this disgusting odor. So they decided to take matters into their
own hands. The couple began to tear the suite apart themselves.
When they pulled the top of the mattress off the box spring, he
found the body of a woman’s body decaying in the springs.
ORIGIN: Although urban legends are sometimes false,
The Body in the Bed is based on a true account. In 1999, the body
of Saul Hernandez, 64, was found in Room 112 of the Burgundy Motor
Inn after two German tourists slept overnight in a suite where they
detected a rancid smell. When the tourists notified the hotel of
the smell, management searched the room and found a decaying body
inside the mattress box. Since then, similar accounts of this urban
legend have been recorded across the United States.
