Urban Legends: Bloody Mary
STORY: Go into a room with a mirror and turn all the
lights off. Bathrooms seem to be perfect for this since they almost
always have a mirror and are usually dark at night with the lights
off and the door closed. Light a candle, look into the mirror and
start chanting "Bloody Mary" or "Hell Mary"
. A version of the legend says you should begin in a whisper as
you chant your voice should grow louder and louder into a scream.
You have to chant "Bloody Mary" 13 times. You should see Bloody
Mary behind your left shoulder or in the mirror after the thirteenth
time.
Beware though, she has been reported to drive
the person mad, scratch their eyes out, pull the
person into the mirror with her or even kill the person
calling her. This is an old legend, it has been around for
ages and is a popular slumber party ritual done by girls as well
as boys.
ORIGIN: The legend is said to be a witch who was executed
a hundred years ago for plying the black arts, or a woman of more
modern times who died in a local car accident in which her face
was hideously mutilated. Some confuse the mirror witch with Mary
I of England, whom history remembers as "Bloody Mary."
The confusion occurs since this murdering British queen killed young
girls so she could bathe in their blood to preserve her youthful
appearance.
