Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
No
man knows till he has suffered from the night how sweet and dear
to his heart and eye the morning can be..
Starring Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves,
Richard E. Grant, Monica Bellucci
In this 1992 version of the Dracula Legend, director
Francis Ford Coppola sought to recreate the original Bram
Stoker's classic novel, something previous films about
Dracula had not attempted. The novel is told via the diary entries
of a young lawyer Jonathan Harker, his fiancée Mina, Lucy Westenra
and Dr John Seward (who is in charge of a lunatic asylum in Essex).
Harker travels to a gloomy village in Eastern Europe, specifically
the Transylvanian abode of Count Dracula, to settle a land
deal for Dr John Seward. However, Harker is captured by Dracula,
who then travels to London, England in a large wooden box on a board
ship to find Harker's fiancée. Dracula begins a reign of seduction
and terror in England, draining the life from Mina's closet friend
Lucy, who later dies despite the intervention of the wise and knowledgeable
Professor Van Helsing. The film concludes back in Transylvania as
Harker's horrific adventure finally ends.
